About Liam Maloney / Photojournalist

at the cabin
I'm a Toronto-based photojournalist specializing in editorial and long-term documentary work. My photos have been published in newspapers and magazines across North America, from assignments for Canadian magazines and newspapers to press photos in the NY Times and SPIN magazine. I was a nominee for the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass in 2006 and a participant in the Eddie Adams Barnstorm XX in 2007.

Currently, I'm developing a documentary film examining the lives of refugees in the Levant, for which I was a finalist for the Hot Docs 2010 Lindalee Tracey Award. For my contribution to OpenFile's G20 coverage, I was nominated for Best News Coverage at the 2010 Canadian Online Publishing Awards. Last year I was nominated for a 2011 National Magazine Award, named runner-up for the Online News Association Best Multimedia Feature Presentation, Small Site and won Gold Medal at the 2011 Canadian Online Publishing Awards for my work on the Poppy File.

All of that is very nice and everything, but the greatest reward I get as a photographer is the gift of people opening their lives to me and inspiring me with their courage, fortitude, talent and creativity.
